Bitmain recently announced that they are releasing two new ASICs for SHA-256 mining. The Antminer S9 used to be leader in Bitcoin mining since 2016 and it is finally getting replaced by something better, based on newer technologies.

As we could expect, there was no way Bitmain would miss their chance of jumping into the 7nm chip ASIC bandwagon. The first company to release a miner based on this new chip technology was the Japanese GMO Group. Apparently, since the technology was pretty new, they have failed to deliver the next big thing in SHA-256 miners.

After them, Canaan Creative announced their own 7nm ASIC – the Avalon A9. The new model is way better than the one by GMO, though again not good enough to be called revolutionary. Apparently, my speculations in that article ended up being spot on (pats himself on the back) and big companies such as Bitmain are now coming up with their own variants of 7nm chip ASICs that are way cooler than smaller manufacturers offer.

As usual, Bitmain keeps their work pretty secret (with the exception of one post on their blog that dates back to September) and then they step forward with a finished product rather than mere words. Which means that tomorrow (8/11/2018), we will be able to purchase their two new miners – the Antminer S15 and T15.

Is it a Good Idea to Purchase the S15 and T15?

If we look back, the Avalon A9 looked like a decent miner until we saw what the competitors offer. Bitmain is known for manufacturing one of the most efficient miners there is, so it was a good idea to wait and see what they will come up with. Whoever did that did the right thing, because Bitmain miners are expected to be up to 60% more efficient than Canaan ones.

That being said, there is one more company that have been doing pretty well recently – Innosilicon. Innosilicon recently managed to create a way better ASIC for SIA coin than Bitmain. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I believe that there is a big chance that Innosilicon might release a 7nm SHA-256 ASIC that could be even better than Bitmain’s.

My question is – when? Mining is all about momentum – ASIC chip technologies get old very quickly and Innosilicon knows it. Which is why, I suspect Inno to announce their own SHA-256 7nm ASICs soon too.

Yeah, the 10nm Innosilicon T2 Turbo 32T is a great SHA-256 miner that outperforms any other existing model, though the drawback is power consumption. 7nm chip technology offers way better power efficiency. Bitmain’s S15 and T15 are expected to be around 60% more power efficient than Innosilicon 10nm ASICs by featuring 42J/Th compared to T2 Turbo’s 68J/Th.

In Conclusion

While I am not here to give financial advice, I personally will wait a little bit more and see what Innosilicon will offer. After all, there is a good chance that Innosilicon might come up with something even better than the S15. If you believe otherwise, you might want to hop into Bitmain’s shop tomorrow November 8 and be one of the first ones to preorder the new miners.
